Common Acer Laptop Problems

This may not come as welcome news, but there are unfortunately a lot of reports about Acer laptop problems circulating on the Internet. Some of the more common ones have to do with unstable laptop performance, most often showing problems with power or the motherboard. Some laptops fail to start up at all, and those that do start up exhibit odd behavior.

But perhaps one of the most common Acer laptop problems is the dreaded “blackscreen.” In such cases, the problem is usually with the LCD display in which the backlight has burnt out. In order to repair these types of Acer laptop problems, the monitor will have to be opened up and the cold cathode tube replaced.

Before you attempt such a repair or take your laptop in to a qualified technician however, first make sure that you didn’t simply turn off the backlight by accident. You can do this by pressing the Fn button and F6 at the same time. This will toggle the display backlight on and off. You may also find it helpful to hold down the Fn button and press the left and right arrow keys, which will raise and lower the backlight brightness respectively.

One of the other fairly common Acer laptop problems has to do with the USB port failing. In such cases, the USB ports still do not work even after the proper drivers have been installed.

Some other Acer laptop problems involve Windows failing to detect the hard drive. There may be numerous reasons for this, but if the hard rive itself has failed, your only option would be to replace it. This problem is different from the fairly common “click of death”, in which case a brand new hard drive makes clicking noises, which is itself a sign that it isn’t running at the proper speed.

Still another common Acer laptop problem has to do with the DVD burner simply ceasing to work, being unable to burn new discs or to read discs that were previously written with the same drive. In these situations, you may have to replace the DVD burner.

My laptop will start normally until I get to the main screen. Then its black with only the Dell Media bar showing on the top of the screen. Even the screen saver will pop up. But the main screen with icons and time and computer/ Internet access will not show. Besides the Media Bar the screen is completely black.

arvie ~ If you have the original installation CDs try reinistalling the Operating System again (be warned that all you have on your machine will be lost unless you have created a backup).

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Tasha ~ Have you made any progress with your problem? You could try starting your laptop in safe mode and do a check on your laptop in this mode …

To start the computer in safe mode:
    1. Click Start and then click Shut Down.
    2. In the drop-down list of the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
    3. As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears.
    4. Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
    5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.

acer laptop problem half screen working, right hand side completely white any ideas.

    This could be:

    1. Loose cable connections. Try reseating the video cable on both ends.
    2. Defective video cable.
    3. Failed LCD screen.

Which one is causing the problem? I don’t know. I’d have to test the laptop with another working screen.

If it’s bad screen, you don’t have to replace the entire display assembly just the LCD screen.

If it’s under warranty get it sorted that way. If not, source a locally based IT expert who’ll test your machine and diagnose the problem.

Ask for a price/quotation before you commit to getting it repaired.

Depending on repair cost, it might be cheaper to buy a new one.

My laptop seems to start and then stop. The light turns on to indicate its on but there is no display on screen. I have an acer aspire

    AJ ~

Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop. You can connect it using a VGA connector ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector ). If nothing is displayed after booting up I’d say that the built-in video is faulty.

Your option is to buy a cheap motherboard on ebay (or equivalent site) because the video can’t be easily replaced as it is soldered onto the motherboard.

If you’re unsure of what you are doing, get a quotation to fix your machine locally – it costs nothing to get one.

If the cost to repair is more than the machine is worth I’d consider buying a new machine.

If this is the case you can salvage the hard drive from your laptop and get an enclosure ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_enclosure )for it so that you can use it as an additional drive.

You may even be able to salvage the RAM from your machine – although its use is limited to specific machines.

Okay, so I have an Acer laptop. Its an Aspire 57202 and it turns on, and even loads the Windows XP(its an older laptop) but once that loads, the screen turns black, but not completely because its the type of black where you can still see light from the laptop screen, just nothing shows up. I’ve tried everything, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

It looks as if your screen is past it. Get onto a local repairer for a quote to repair/replace the screen.

To be honest, with the laptop being so old, you’re probably better off considering buying a new one.

i start my laptop up and its fine, connects to the internet fine, shows its charging when plugged in, sounds fine but then sometimes, quite often actually, it just dies as if its run out of battery but it hasn’t. personally i think its the battery but my dad thinks it may be bigger problem, don’t want to buy a new laptop, my laptops not even a year old! not sure what to do about the problem, could end up losing work if it continues. has any one had this problem and resolved it?

  11. Admin on January 2nd, 2012

Your laptop should still be under guaranteed if it’s not even a year old yet.

Pull out the receipt and contact the shop where you bought it.

(As an aside … it’s hard to see how the battery would die so quickly in a new laptop but deeper problems would have to be checked out by a professional.)

On some of the Aspires on the back of the laptop is a little pin size hole to reset. Unplug your laptop so it is on battery, turn it off. Stick a paperclip into the reset hole and press down for a few seconds. Wait 5 minutes and then restart your laptop.
