If you have just purchased a laptop, you have probably put in a considerable amount of time and effort in researching the best model suited for your needs, not to mention the money involved. As perfect as your laptop may seem however, it is inevitable that a few problems would come up here and there. In the case of HP laptop problems, some of the most common ones seem to be related to the battery, as seen in numerous forum posts on the Internet.

Here are a few HP laptop problems related to that concern and some ideas on how to solve them:

One of the most common HP laptop problems involve the battery failing to charge when it is plugged into the mains. Even if the battery display is at 0% and is obviously in need of charging, this number may not increase. Another common symptom is unplugging the AC adapter, which doesn’t turn off the laptop, although the warning that the battery level is at 0% persists along with a notice that it should be plugged in. This is particularly disturbing since even new laptops have been known to exhibit these types of HP laptop problems.

The first thing you should do when faced with this problem is to remove the battery and re-seat it. In some cases, these types of HP laptop problems could be nothing more than a bad contact and this should be enough to solve the problem.

In other instances, such HP laptop problems may be the result of a dead battery, which is caused by overcharging or overheating. For these problems, you may be able to bring the battery back to life if there is a reset button provided, as in the case of many modern laptop batteries.

Some of the more alarming HP laptop problems have to do with certain battery units that have been identified as fire hazards. Up to 70,000 HP batteries have been recalled so if your laptop uses one of them, the best thing to do is to stop using them and to get in touch with an HP representative.

Laptop battery problems can take on many forms, and often the user is clueless that anything is wrong with the battery until the laptop just fails to start up one day. Below are some thoughts on what forms laptop battery problems take, what factors contribute to them and what you can do about them.

The Memory Effect
This occurrence is normally seen in Ni-Cad and NiMH batteries, and is often caused by the battery being recharged even before it has fully used up its stored energy. This causes the battery to eventually fail to charge to its normal capacity. The best way to avoid these types of laptop battery problems is discharge the battery fully every month before recharging it.

The cost of laptop batteries
Some batteries are designed to work only with a specific laptop brand or model, which makes them more expensive, since such batteries are typically manufactured in low volumes. Unfortunately, some manufacturers do this as a way to entice customers into buying a new laptop. Conversely, laptop batteries that are manufactured in large volumes result in lower costs for the customer.

Should the battery be left in the laptop for long period even when it is unused?
This is generally not a good idea, as this will cause the battery to discharge slowly even if it is unused. In some case, the laptop may even fail to recognize the battery if it has been allowed to discharge completely. It may also be a good idea to avoid charging your battery fully before storing it.

Battery heating issues
Most laptop batteries typically become too hot to touch when they are in use. If this happens, it might be a good idea to take it out and let it cool down for a while. If the battery heats up excessively shortly after it has been placed back in the laptop, it may have to be replaced.

Storing batteries in the fridge
It may surprise you to know that batteries can be stored in the fridge to prevent them from losing their charge quickly, although you will have to store them in an airtight container.

In many cases, the root cause of a laptop problem is overheating, and the most crucial component in this regard is the heatsink. Too much heat in the interior of your laptop can cause crashes and possibly another mysterious laptop problem. This is particularly true if the fans are clogged with dust along with the heatsink.

In general, desktop PCs are less prone to this type of problem as there are one or more fans causing more air to circulate inside the case. Desktop PCs also tend to have larger heatsinks and larger fans. In addition, the power supply, video card and the chipset may have their own fans, as opposed to the one or two small fans that are commonly present laptops.

The simplest way to solve a laptop problem of this nature is by cleaning out the fan and the heatsink with a can of compressed air, preferably every two months or so. You may be able to avoid a common laptop problem with this simple method.

If dust has already clogged up the heatsink considerably however, this may not be enough. If that is the case, you may have to remove the heatsink and clean it more thoroughly. Unfortunately this is a more complex procedure for solving a laptop problem, and you may be better off taking your laptop to a repair shop. There are plenty of sensitive components inside a laptop and with much less space than in a desktop PC, it is way too easy to make a costly mistake that will result in a more serious laptop problem than overheating.

One way that you could prevent this common laptop problem is by making sure that the rubber feet at the bottom of the laptop are firmly in place. In most laptops, these are simply glued onto the bottom of the casing, making it easy to lose them. Thankfully, they are quite easy to replace, so you should have a few spares lying around in case you do lose them.

As you can see, heat is probably the main cause of a laptop problem. Address your heating issues and you should be able to minimize these occurrences.
