Laptop Problems Caused By Drinks And Other Liquids

Few things are more refreshing than a nice cold drink on a hot day but that is precisely what can cause a myriad laptop problems. Laptops and drinks simply do not mix, and this goes for any type of liquid as well. The unfortunate thing is that virtually all of the laptops you can buy on the market are simply not resistant to any type of liquid at all. Interestingly enough, manufacturers can help prevent a lot of laptop problems by simply adding a plastic or metal tray underneath the keyboard, which should at least help guard against minor spills.

In any case, there are a few things you can do to solve laptop problems of this nature, with the most important one being to simply avoid bringing liquids anywhere near your laptop. No matter how stable your work area is, accidents are inevitable and simply keeping drinks away from your laptop should go a long way in preventing any mishaps.

Ok let’s say you have already spilled a drink on your prized laptop…what to do then? The best thing to do is unplug the power cord quickly, turn the laptop over allowing the liquid to spill out and remove the battery. Do not even try to shut down your laptop through the normal shutdown procedure as this will take a few minutes…enough time to cause irreversible damage to your laptop.

After you have removed the battery, keep the laptop upside down, making sure that as much of the liquid as possible spills out. Do not under any circumstances turn your laptop back on to see if it works! You will have to make sure that all the affected components are thoroughly dried out, which could take as long as 48 hours. Now, unless you are experienced with electronics and are confident that you could clean out any spills, your best options is probably to take your laptop to a qualified technician. This is particularly important if the liquid you spilled has sugar in it, which can dry up on the components and cause all sorts of laptop problems.
